Executive coaching for females within the STEM sector

Are you a female working in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEMs)?

Did you know that only 13% of women make up the work force within occupations classed as STEM and this number is declining?

McKinsey & Co states that: “Enabling women to meet their full potential in work could add as much as $28 trillion to annual GDP in 2025, raising global economic output by 26 percent over a business-as-usual scenario.” (McKinsey Global Institute The power of parity, McKinsey & Co, Sept 2015)

32% of companies across sectors currently have difficulties recruiting experienced STEM staff, and 20% find it difficult to recruit entrants to STEM. So why are women finding it so difficult to stay in the role?

As part of Leadership Excel’s mission to improve the UK’s productivity, we are looking to work with female employees who work within STEM roles to help them build confidence in the workplace and enable them to become effective leaders.

We have a two fold approach to this problem:

  1. We want to work directly with female working within STEMs directly to boost their enjoyment, confidence and leadership development.
  2. We also want to work with the organisations directly to encourage them to embrace diversity and give the same opportunities to females in STEMS as they do for males.

“Diversity is a key driver of innovation and is a critical component of being successful on a global scale.” … In a global survey, 85% corporate diversity and talent leaders agreed with statement “A diverse and inclusive workforce is crucial to encouraging different perspectives and ideas that drive innovation”. (Global Diversity and Inclusion Fostering Innovation Through a Diverse Workforce, Forbes Insights, 2011)

If your organisation employs female engineers, contact Leadership Excel today for an information discussion about coaching for female engineers to improve their confidence.

It is a well-known fact that any when humans feel intimidated, they naturally fight for survival. Therefore, they will not be thinking at their best, giving their best performance or feeling confident to make the best decisions. People leave jobs because of people, not the job itself. Are you 100% happy that females within STEM roles in your workplace are 100% happy?

Here are some good reasons to make sure your female STEM workers are happy:

  • “Diversity is a key driver of innovation and is a critical component of being successful on a global scale.” … In a global survey, 85% corporate diversity and talent leaders agreed with statement “A diverse and inclusive workforce is crucial to encouraging different perspectives and ideas that drive innovation”. (Global Diversity and Inclusion Fostering Innovation Through a Diverse Workforce, Forbes Insights, 2011)
  • “Companies with more women on their boards were found to outperform their rivals with a 42% higher return in sales, 66% higher return on invested capital and 53% higher return on equity”. (Women on Boards, DBIS, February 2011)
  • 15.8% of engineering and technology undergraduates in the UK are female but only 9% of the engineering workforce is female
  • Only 6% of registered engineers and technicians (i.e. CEng, IEng, EngTech) are women and the UK has the lowest percentage of female engineering professionals in Europe
  • 64% of engineering employers say a shortage of engineers in the UK is a threat to their business.
  • Women Fellows of the Royal Academy of Engineering: 2% in 2006 and 4% in 2014.
  • The UK currently relies on inward migration for engineering skills: immigrants (EEA and non-EEA) account for 20% of professionals in strategically important sectors such as oil and gas extraction, aerospace, and computer, electronic and optical engineering. (NIESR, Skilled immigration and strategically important skills in the UK economy 2012. Not all companies can or want to use migration to fill skills gaps: the use of non-UK nationals is limited in some sectors, for example by security restrictions or concern about retention)

Thank you to Women in Engineering and WISE for their statistics.
